It aids the protection of the teeth on which the root canal treatment is damaged. Pulp (the soft layer inside the teeth containing the nerves, blood and the lymph vessels) dies when damaged in such an extent not to be able to repair itself. Generally, this is caused by bacteria inside the broken teeth or deep decays. Bacteria cause abscess inside the dental pulp. If the damaged or diseased pulp is not removed, the tooth and the tissues around are exposed to infection. And eventually, you may loose your teeth completely.
While in the past, the only solution was extraction of the tooth when encountered with diseased soft tooth layer, it is possible to treat these teeth nowadays.
Tooth loses its animation and the infection may spread to whole tooth if pulp can not repair itself due to deep decay and crack. If canal treatment is not carried out, infection may reach up to the tissues on root apex. Also the jaw bone surrounding the tooth gets inflamed and abrades. Abscess develops in this formed cavity. This scene is accompanied with ache and swelling and the tooth is lost in a short time.
Stages of canal treatment;
1. First of all, anesthesia is applied to tooth for painless and comfortable treatment
2. Afterwards, the decay is cleaned and when the pulp is reached, the affected and soft tissue is removed. The residues or nerves and tissues are cleaned.
3. Shape is given to the tooth canal up to the apex of the root. If necessary, the healing may be speeded up by using some medicines.
4. Between the sessions, top of the tooth is covered with temporary filling material until the healing of the tooth is completed. After determining that development of abscess is prevented and the oozing of the abscess from the apex of the root is stopped, inside of the canal is filled with a special material until the apex of the root.
5. In some cases, these sessions are not needed and it is possible to complete the canal treatment healthfully in a single session.
If the tooth is not infected again and if the precautions are taken to prevent the decay, this filling can be used forever. With your regular visit to the dentist, you can catch the infection in the beginning. Also, tooth’s repeated decay must be prevented by proper oral care.
